Many organisations have been decrying the effectiveness of the annual appraisal in recent years, which has led to the introduction of regular check-ins, mini-appraisals and other ways of measuring and communicating performance. According to a Mercer 2017 Global Talent Trends report, 88% of companies have made changes to their performance management approach since 2016, with 90% of these companies experiencing direct improvements in engagement. 

However, it's equally true that not every employer is ready or able to change the nature of performance conversations right now.
